Franchise FAQ

What type of support do I get from Smiling Moose Rocky Mountain Deli?

We have a seasoned team dedicated to supporting our franchise owners. While site selection and lease execution are your responsibilities (subject to our approval), we’ll assist you in the process. We provide ongoing periodic business consultations, new product introductions, marketing/brand awareness support and training on new systems and initiatives. And, we’re never more than a phone call away.

What’s the typical size of a Smiling Moose Rocky Mountain Deli?

We typically look at sites between 1,600 and 2,400 square feet, depending on the location and potential guest traffic, though we do have sites as large as 2,800 square feet. We’ve found that one of the benefits of our concept is that we can adapt our footprint and, consequently, the cost of entry, to match the market size. This is a big benefit compared to some concepts that only offer a cookie cutter approach to real estate.

What does it cost to open a Smiling Moose Rocky Mountain Deli?

The total initial investment necessary to begin operation of a single Smiling Moose Rocky Mountain Deli ranges from $315,300 to $685,000, including the initial franchise fee of $35,000. If you enter into an area development agreement, the development fee will be $35,000 for the first store, $30,000 for the second store and $25,000 for each additional deli to be opened under that agreement.

What are the royalty and brand development fees?

Our continuing royalty fee is currently 5% of gross sales and our marketing and brand fund is a total of 5% of gross sales.

Can I own a single deli?

Though we are specifically focused on multi-unit development with experienced operators, we’d be willing to discuss the option if the trade area only supports one unit.

Do I need to be involved in the daily operations of my deli?

Absolutely. The only alternative is to have an operating partner with at least a 10% equity interest in the business.

Will I get training before I open?

Yes. We have a 5 week training program that is conducted at our training deli in Denver, Colorado.

Do I have to meet any financial requirements to open a Smiling Moose Rocky Mountain Deli?

We require that you have roughly $350,000 in liquid assets for each deli that you will be opening.

What are the typical hours of operation?

Our minimum hours of operation are 7am to 7pm, 7 days a week. However, hours of operation can be increased to take advantage of the guest traffic in your specific trade area.

Does the Smiling Moose Rocky Mountain Deli support additional business channels?

Yes. While most of our guests visit us for lunch, we have a strong breakfast channel, and our ongoing marketing efforts support franchisees who develop a catering revenue stream.

How soon can I open my deli?

From the franchise agreement signing, it typically takes 6 to 9 months to open your deli. The timing can vary according to how long it takes to find your site and execute a lease.
